Armor got too thick. Germans used the PZB 39.
I'm not that familiar with those weapons, but for whatever reason I binge watched great tank battles today on AHC they they discussed the German and American anti-tank rifles.
That and sloping armor, as well as Bolt on plates, and track sections strapped to the outside of tanks

On page 13 of the Dec. 1956 issue of Guns Magazine, you will find an ad from the Hunter's Lodge of Arlington, VA, offering a Boys MKI anti-tank rifle for $79.95, used! A new one, "US Govt. property" marked, was only $125.00. $7.45 would buy you 10 rounds of ammo, and another $9.50 would get you an accessory kit that included, among other things, seven spare 5 round magazines.
