That is sad. They had hydrofoil ferrys back then that were cool. I bet my favorite steakhouse is gone too along with the Pearl City tavern and Tammy's Topless Titty Temple.

We went to the big island on our last trip, for our 25th anniversary years ago. We stayed on the Kona Coast, but toured most of the island including the volcanos. I was amazed at how diverse the big island is. The differences we saw in climate and terrain traveling from the Kona Coast up to the Hamakua Coast to Hilo then across to the volcanoes was fascinating to say the least.

Oh God that brings back memories! Beautiful. I spent many a day there getting sun burnt but it was worth it. Also The Toilet Bowl can be interesting.
Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. Watch out for the four foot long barracuda just over the reef. Oh, don’t wear anything shiny.
If you’re a great swimmer, try boarding at the North Shore. I just about didn’t make it back to shore when I tried it due to the massive undertow during the month of March when we were there. The sand is awesome on that side of the island!
