I know a few of those myself. I live really close to one. It’s not completely abandoned. They still bury folks there, but nobody takes care of it. Local folklore says it started as a Chickasaw Slave cemetery and the Chickasaw Freedmen kept using it after they were freed. It’s almost full, but there are civil war era graves there, and in the back there are a bunch of stones that are slick and some just piles of rubble. It’s hidden in the middle of a section off of a private drive. I see a backhoe parked in my neighbors drive everyone once in a while, and I know there will be a new stone back there soon. I know of a scant few more, and every time I drive by them it makes me a little sad. I don’t know why. I suppose it’s no different than the 1000’s of folks buried on the prairie by themselves and forgotten, but still.
