So how did those fancy long johns work out?

Actually very well. Color me impressed. They wicked the moisture away from the skin and I never felt cold even though temps were in the single digits and low teens in the morning.
In the past after a tough climb even at cold temps, the jacket is unzipped, gloves off, hat off, trying to cool down and when we would stop for whatever reason, the cold air would really hit you. Not this time.
I'm a believer.

Thanks, It wasn't too bad, just didn't want to take a chance of making it worse. It's fine now. Looking forward to next year.

I understand. I hope next year turns out many times better!

Those were a couple of nice bulls you got a picture of. Are there very many "trophy" bulls in the area you hunt?

Cow elk - about how many pounds of meat could you put in the freezer from one?

We have never put a scale on any of our elk, so I'll use the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation specs that is online.
Size and Weight of Rocky Mountain Elk
Newborn calf: 35 pounds (16 kg)

Cow: 500 pounds (225 kg) (Tule elk: 300 lbs., Roosevelt’s elk: 600 lbs.)
4 1/2 feet (1.3 m) at the shoulder
6 1/2 feet (2 m) from nose to tail

Bull: 700 pounds (315 kg) (Tule elk: 400 lbs., Roosevelt’s elk: 900 lbs.)
5 feet (1.5 m) at the shoulder
8 feet (2.4 m) from nose to tail

I think most processors say there is a 60% loss to head, hide and bone. Pretty much the same as whitetail.
