Taurus handguns may or may not be a good buy. If you get a good one it is good forever,,, If you get a bad one it is bad forever,,, Lately their quality control stinks. In the last 18 months I have bought 2 brand new Taurus revolvers,,, One was bad out of the box and multiple trips to Taurus hasn't fixed the problem completely,,, The other was good right out of the box and it's been a solid performer and has given me no operational problems. A new Taurus 990 Tracker is about $400.00,,, A good quality S&W Model 18 or 17 will run from $400.00 to $600.00,,, But the quality difference is immeasurable even when factoring 20 years of use. Believe me when I say I understand budget,,, I would only buy another Taurus if I got a guarantee from the dealer,,, That they would take the gun back if it malfunctions rather than relying on the warranty. That's what allowed me to buy the second Taurus,,, Moot point since it's been a good gun for me. But if you must buy Taurus, avoid the Model 94 series,,, They have been plagued with cylinder lockup,,, And have very bad triggers and timing. My dealer won't even order a Model 94 for a customer any more,,, He's seen more than half in the last year be bad ones. The model 990 Tracker is the only Taurus .22 he will order now,,, According to him he's only had one problem out of more than a dozen sold. If it is just gonna be for plinking,,, Consider a Ruger single-action instead,,, Used single-six revolvers are very high quality,,, You can probably find a good used one for less than $300.00. Just my humble opinion,,, With Taurus it's always more of a gamble than with other brands. .
