Somehow......someway....I was never spanked by my parents. For some reason in the back of my mind, I knew even as a very small child where to draw the line. I was "grounded" and items taken away for 6 months or longer but not spanked. My parents tried to reason with me and explain situations to me.....as follows: About 1977 or 78, I was 14 years old and got lucky.....VERY LUCKY. There was a little old man at my folks church that was slowly going blind and he wanted to sell his car...that he was the original owner. 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Not this car but just like it....faded paint and the cloth seats were starting to split BUT it was an original. I called it pink and white...he called it salmon(color) and white, 3 speed on the post. My dad warned me NOT to drive it!!! At 14, and on the (dirt roads with no one in sight) road.....a blind drunk person, going in reverse who would hit me....my dad told me I would still be in the "wrong" because I wasn't even supposed to be on the road at 14 years of age. Well........... I found out that if you put the keys in the ignition and turned it to acc....you could pull the keys out. The ignition had "lips" you could grab a hold of, so when I pulled the keys out I grabbed the lips, pushed in the clutch , turned the ignition... it would start. My dad had put the keys up and when he and my mother had left for work....I went joy riding around the section lines on those dirt roads...picking up a few of my buddies riding around the country side. Later that afternoon I noticed the gas gauge was getting low.....so I drove over to Carney...back when they had 1 gas station to fill up...take my friends home and get that car parked in the driveway BEFORE my parents had returned home. Pulling up to the gas station I get out and look for the gas cap. I look and I look!!!! My buddies get out and we look for that D@MN gas cap!!! I just about pulled off the license plate....I climbed under the car and see the tank but for the life of me I cannot find the gas cap!!! Finally a little old man putting gas in his Datsun truck pulls up and asks me if I needed help.....Uh...H^LL YES!!! He shows me where the gas cap is.....on the sloped chrome in the back of the car...a little door that you open and THERE is the gas cap!! Soooooo....by now I was late getting home. I had to drop off my buddies and as I pulled into the driveway....there was my dad, with folded arms and "THAT" look on his face. I park the car, get out, and he starts to question why I did this...calm and cool manner....knowing the severity of driving a car at 14 years old. I got tired of his lecture and told him I was going to sell that %$#@ car and he couldn't lecture me again. In his wisdom he told me: "I'm going to let you sell that car". "When you mature and realize what you did, you'll regret your decision". ***2019, .... 56 years old.....I wonder if the person out in California is still enjoying my STUPID DECISION!!!???
