I didn't have a clue that most of it was built of cast iron and built during the war of the states.
1 million pounds of scaffolding, that equaled 52 miles of pipe on the exterior.
At the same time, they built 1/2 million pounds of scaffolding in the interior of the rotunda that is also cast iron.

Always thought it was masonry.
Special on it tonight.

Last time I was in DC they were starting the revamping process of the Capital dome. That scaffolding was impressive. Consequently, we could not see everything on the tour of the Capitol because of the construction. They did explain some of the construction techniques that were being checked. We did however get to ride in the underground train system that goes from the Capitol to the Senate offices.
