Maybe this will spark a few memories for some of you. A friend is selling through a big employee collection he bought, and in it are many prototypes that never made it to production.

I thought this one was super cool....an old Aston Martin. Looks like it had silver paint on it at one time, so it instantly makes me think how cool an old track set would have been with a James Bond theme.

This is hand made out of resin, and by the wheels on it I'd say they were toying with the idea around 1969-1970.

(If anybody wants to relive their youth with a killer piece, it's available for $3,500)

I had probably 25-30 on my bedroom shelf when I went into the Air Force,,,
I doubt there was anything unique or valuable in the bunch,,,
But they were all very well track-used.

First 4th of July after I entered service,,,
My younger brothers blew 'em all up with firecrackers.

I let them live.

Odds of finding a prototype at a garage sale are slim, but obviously not none. I know of two times it has happened, once in Wisconsin and once in Texas. Pretty odd considering the cars were prototypes from Mattel which was in California, but it happens!

Just last week a friend of mine found 4 prototypes out of a group of cars on the Goodwill Auction site...so somebody had the protos and gave them to Goodwill. Goodwill didnt know they were prototypes, and honestly neither did my friend until he got them and was shocked. There were two other cars in the lot that were rare so he bought it for those cars and ended up with 4 prototypes to boot. It's crazy what's out there still!

There's still a HUGE gap to fill between junk and prototype though, so odds of finding a car worth $1k at a garage sale are much higher but I've never been so fortunate.

I wish I had my hot wheels collection that was stolen out of storage back in 2008. I had hundreds of cars. Some from the early and mid 90s. Like I had the entire dark rider series in the packages. I mostly focused on 70s mopar cars like the roadrunner and dodge daytona charger, Plymouth GTX. I think in my current collection I have a couple error cars. One is bare metal unpainted in the package. I have another with mismatched wheels.

I used to do Mopars...I could have HOOKED YOU UP. I did keep one Mopar prototype, a Coronet with blank base/barbie interior/ZAMAC/Unspun. For some reason those arent worth much compared to others and I thought it was too cool to sell for the $50-75 they were bringing.

I have it bad for the Classic Cord/Auburn 852/36 Cord/31 Doozie...so that's what my entire collection is now. I love error cars. I've only found a few in the wild when I was collecting newer stuff but never of a casting I collected. I now have around 120 errors but had to buy them all off of eBay. They're all Auburn/Cord/Doozie castings.

My favorite errors are the "no fender" ones. I think I have around 20 of those.
Here's a few.
