I served two tours in Maryland (3yrs and 5 yrs), and in the second tour was TDY to NY, NJ, and MA about 1/3 of the time visiting contractors. I have first-hand knowledge of the laws and policies of those states, and can give you real-life answers to how it works there, and I'm sure you are not going to like what I tell you. Take MD for starters. They do NOT issue CHLs for the purpose of protecting yourself; they will issue personal CHLs to protect MONEY. This has been through the courts and upheld. Thus MDs reaction to your "forcing them to protect you" has already been tried and rejected. Secondly, MD allows transporting firearms only between specific, authorized locations, so IT IS ILLEGAL TO PLAY TOURIST IN MD WITH A FIREARM IN THE CAR. If you arrive in MD with a stored firearm IAW the Federal FOPA, best NOT stop in the state unless you can stash the firearm legally with a resident friend or a gun store. I could go through the other states similarly, in great detail, but MD is typical. DC and NYC are far worse, and will arrest you for transporting A SINGLE CARTRIDGE. And some rich people from out of state have fought it all the way through the courts---and LOST!
