Interesting that the case blew in the middle instead of pushing the bullet out.

Not really, the thin wall of the .22 lr shell is not enough to contain the blast, it needs a breech to reinforce the shell walls and direct the bullet down the barrel. In this case the bullet and back end of the shell were held in place so the force of the blast went to the weakest point, which was the side walls of the shell.
