I had a very similar experience while I was in college - same half-awake, half-asleep state, feelings of dread, inability to move or speak - though I could "hear" myself struggling to speak. My roommate was gone for the weekend and I had a distinct feeling that someone was watching me from just out of my field of view. When the feeling ended I shot straight up wide awake. I was told it is a not uncommon event - basically I was caught half-way between being asleep and being awake with sleep paralysis still in effect my conscious mind not quite released and my sub-conscious still mostly in charge. I have no comment on the other aspects of your experience - I have no way to judge what you subjectively felt or perceived. I am not disparaging what you said or saying it couldn't have been. I only related my story to give you another possible explanation.
