Is there any point in buying a tv anymore?

If you want a large (50" or bigger) display or to watch over the air (OTA) TV, you want a TV. Otherwise, a monitor will generally work fine.
The only thing on over the air tv is commercials. Wife counted 14 in a row . And they are getting longer. You forget what program is on in by the time the commercials are over. You might get 2 minutes of program before the same commercials start all over again.
TVs are monitors these days, a lot of them even come with variable refresh rate now. This was strictly the purview of monitors (for gaming) until recently. Ever since they have been capable of 1080P resolution it's been practical though. There was even one big tube monitor that Gateway sold back in the day that was both, but that was an outlier. Back in my bachelor days my bedroom TV was my 22 inch tube monitor (serious beast) and I had a TV tuner card in the computer.
