    Of course not, and I'm quite proficient with a map and compass. That doesn't mean I should forego modern conveniences; it also doesn't address the communications requirement of the original post.

    Agreed. Which is why I always have my compass with me should my Garmin fail.

    Delorme inreach is another good option. Txt option. Especially if your u ever truly hunt any backcountry.
