I would try NAPA. Pretty sure the auto parts stores don't rent taps, but NAPA usually has a decent selection for sale.

5/8 x 32tpi?? 5/8 X 24 tpi is a national extra fine thread and hard enough to find as it is. What is 5/8 x 32 used for?

I think 32 tpi is common on (working) model engines and such..

5/8-32 is one weird combo. Having been a machinist for 25 years or so, I never saw it used. You can probably order one and wait for it to be made by one of the tap makers. It will cost $$$!

It is probably firearm related. I have a 1/2-32, it is for the gas piston nut on a M1 Carbine.
