Was there a time when you could just say "no"?

I'll drop a few coins in the Salvation Army buckets if I go out shopping (A rare occasion) around Christmas time. I donate stuff to Good Will. I respond to solicitations with a guilt-free, altruism-free, excuse-free "No."

I think I'll try adding the following to my repertoire: "No, but thanks for the opportunity" (while in my mind I'll add "to say no.")

Years back when I went to a sales school,,,
We were taught that the only "no" answer we couldn't "rebut" was an "unqualified no".

No thank you,,,
I appreciate your courtesy but would like to add one more point.

No, maybe later,,,
When would be a good time for us to meet again?

The list could go on and on,,,
We were given a list of 25 qualified no answers,,,
And at least two powerful rebuttals each to reopen the sales pitch.

No.

Just a plain unqualified no.

Nothing can be legitimately said after that,,,
I rarely ever have to repeat myself.

We have been conditioned by society to be polite,,,
I call it conditioning to be prey for people who truly have no scruples.

Being firm in your answer is not being impolite,,,
It's not letting a truly impolite individual take advantage of you.

Aarond

P.S.

I used to be an easy sale until I attended that sales school,,,
I learned how to effectively say no to a sales pitch,,,
And that commissioned salesmen are evil.

Me too Woody! But with ‘friends’ it is usually hard to say NO. Seems they screw ya anyway.😖

I said no to an accountant at work last week. She started to ask questions and I didn't want to explain. My second statement was a question to her. What part of no don't you understand? I know it was curt but this sensitive world we live in now gets to me sometimes. I think sensitive folks should learn to identify as folks with thicker skin.
How did she take that?

As for myself, I often have to say no. With reasonable people I try to be tactful. With unreasonable people my usual response is "What part of "NO" confused you? Was it the "N" or the "O"?
