I gotta be honest man - I've owned and had a lot of ARs pass through my grubby fingers.

If you want a nice upper the likes of which will be worthy of that lower, get an N4 Light with Noveske's modified SWS rail (if you plan on running a can, get the switchblock). I've got one sitting right here and it was totally worth selling my LaRue upper. This is the nicest, lightest (for what it is) upper I've ever owned.

The only other complete upper I would consider is a Noveske built on VLTOR's VIS upper.

If you want to build one yourself, I'd get a Noveske or Lothar-Walther barrel and put it in either a Noveske upper or a VLTOR MUR (possibly a BCM or Sabre Defense) and go with the lightest rail you can find (especially if you're running it out towards the end of the barrel) - maybe a DD Lite.

I'd probably get a BCM or Noveske BCG.

Yep, I can spend other people's money - its what I do (but all my friends have really cool ARs that they got for a really good deal because I look out for my peeps :thumb: ).

IMO, the two most important parts of any build are the barrel and the BCG.

Stick with BCM/Noveske/LMT/Sabre/Colt/Daniel Defense here and you'll have a great shooting, highly reliably weapon. Yes, billett receivers are cool, but they're just fluff. I'd rather have a $300 barrel (say, a DD chrome-lined CHF) on a $90 forged upper than a $150 Company-X barrel on a $250 billett VLTOR MUR.

I guess all I'm trying to say is to put the money where it actually makes a difference - the heart and soul of the gun and good optics.

Weight is also hugely important. It may not seem like it now....but if you deck it out with full length rails, bipod, etc., you'll likely regret it.

I'm gonna recommend you build a featherweight upper. It's the latest trend, and it has tons of merit. Go with a 16" pencil barrel from Bravo Co., Daniel Defense, etc. Here's a thread that has tons of info on building lightewight AR's, to include weights for a bunch of different parts.

Here's a few more threads on lightweight builds:
