You're not really handicapping yourself with .40 unless you shoot IDPA or USPSA Production with factory ammo. Lots of shooters will shoot a .40 in USPSA Limited with ammo making Major, but have a Minor .40 load for Production and IDPA. The only other handicap to .40 is the cost of lead.
