I need to find our air gun enthusiasts on this forum. Need to know about if better to have 177 or 22 when talking about lower velocity guns such as 1377 & 1322. I am quite sure an 800fps 22 rifle has more FPE than say a 1000fps 177 rifle. However, when you go to shorter barrels and pumps, is it better to have the extra velocity of the 177 (say 550-650) or the extra weight of the 22 moving slower for hunting small game? I am thinking at "some point" the extra size of the 22 is offset by moving slower when you get into shorter barrel, lower powered guns? Then it becomes a wash and the 177 and 22 are about the same FPE in some cases?

I'm an enthusiast myself. I've shot many a June Bug from concealment with this.

Seriously, most of the time, I believe folks post up about air guns in the FIREARMS CHAT section

Well I have a little range setup and have a whole new (old) world opened up to me. I have been enjoying the daisy 35 on 1 pump w/ open sights & bb's to dispatch digging wasps that have taken over my wife's flower beds (prob killed 50 in the last few days). Also used it to take out a large rat in my garage (w/ lead pellet of course). Funny how the cheapest new gun I have is doing all I need and the expensive ones are just plinking steel and paper. But I will be adapting the 1377 to take over for small pest control soon. And druryj, I am very sad I got rid of my original red ryder circa 1981 or so...But I did get one for my daughter and have done some cans...never thought about june bugs...sounds like a challenge with a spring lever gun.

I shoot a lot of air gun in the backyard. My neighbors are cool with it. I’ve got a pellet trap and some small swinging targets. It’s a cheap, fun way to get some trigger time. I prefer the vintage stuff but have a few modern single cock rifles too.

Wow, LOTS of vintage there...they don't make em like the used to, but the Crosman American classics & backpackers are still made in USA thankfully. I have really taken a liking to the 22cal stuff and thought my loyalty to 177 would prevent that. 177 still the cheapest and best for targets though for sure. My hangup here is that I want to know why 22 is better at the "breakpoint" where the FPE is about the same between the two. Obviously in rifles and especially PCP guns, the 22 is probably always the best for hunting. But for pistols and carbines, the faster 177 seems to hit just has hard as the slower 22 when you get into the 400-600fps range guns? Also, the 177 shoots flatter and may be more accurate in the lesser FPS guns? In the 800+ fps range, the 22 is plenty accurate at that velocity so that has driven my affection vs the 1000+ fps 177 rifles which are louder and seem more finicky to me. I literally have 2 identical break barrels and the 22 is much quieter. I thought it was super sonic vs sub, but I don't think the 177 rifle is going over 1050-1100 so should not be breaking the sound barrier?

I’ve ran them all over a chronograph. The 177’s that advertise will do 1250 barely make 950 with hunting pellets. The closest I’ve got is 1075 with the 10grain superlights. Just a plastic cup with a dot of lead on it.

Well one of mine doing that; advertises good w/alloy, and should get 800+ with lead, but gets less than 700...and there is a rattle in the piston that I have learned plagues these nitro piston guns.

The 1377 dispatched a rodent in the garage last night though on 5 pumps. Funny how good the USA made guns are compared to the Chinese ones.
