I was talking to my neighbor across the street and we discussed that situation, sounds like that is what happened to his filter system in his old house, just ended up bypassing the system after a few years.

Lots of things to chew on here, not sure how long we will stay here and that will be a factor when it comes to cost.

Thank you

Dunno about a PITA. I don’t remember exactly how often I had to do it, but a 40lb bag of Morton salt pellets was like $5 and would last a few months.

I just checked the Home Depot site, and it looks like the bags are $8-$10 these days.

The one downside can be that salt-softened water isn’t necessarily great for plants. You can also use potassium chloride pellets instead; when I was using KCl, it wasn’t much more than NaCl, but I dunno about now. I couldn’t find them in a quick search at HD.
We went through salt like crazy with a full house. I reckon it depends on how many people are in the house. Of course, ours was old and did it's thing faithfully on schedule. It was 60-ish lbs a month religiously.

Not sure if the flip to filters and citric acid made a difference in the garden, or if we finally got the hang of it, but the last few years kimchi crops have been epic.

First things first…. Are you on a public water supply or private well? Rule 1.: you can’t manage what you don’t measure. If on a public water supply…. Your provider should be able to give you the actual measurements of hardness. If private… just get it tested for hardness and alkalinity. If you know a local water operator… they can help with this or refer you to a lab for testing. Without knowing the actual characteristics of “your” water… you’re shooting blind on any treatment.
Good luck!
