Everyone always says this but it would seem to me that in closes quarters that a handgun would be better? I could agree with a long gun like a shotgun as a good choice if rioters/looters were coming onto your property, but it seems like a handgun offers more versatility for most home defense situations; especially if a perp was inside the house?

A shot gun is going to do far more damage, but a pistol has far more maneuverability and more capacity. As with everything, there's a tradeoff

A Sweetwater County, Wyoming deputy told me once that if I ever had to go to court to testify about a self-defense shooting in my home, it would definitely be in my favor if there was no conflicting testimony to muddy the waters, so to speak. Get a shotgun and load it up with 00 or slug.

Cost, a decent pump shotgun is less than a decent pistol.
Ammo is almost always available
.Easier to reload.
Less restrictions on shotguns, although Trump’s Right Wing Court is making inroads on that.
