Why was the word SUBMARINE invented?

If the word SUBMARINE had not been coined, The Beatles might have otherwise sung like this as follows:

"WE all LIVE inna yellow-submersible-BOAT, yellow-submersible BOAT, yellow-submersible-BOAT."
