Don't know about in Tombstone.
But in later years Earp refereed a boxing match in San Francisco and was accused of fixing the fight.
He was also carrying a gun while at the boxing match; was later arrested and fined for illegally carrying a handgun.
"...Right after Earp stepped into the ring a San Francisco police captain noticed the Colt 45 pistol Earp had stashed under his jacket and confiscated it in full view of the spectators.
...While the court ruling saved Earp from going on trial for fixing the fight, he was convicted of carrying a concealed handgun into the ring and fined $50."

He was a boxing referee before he ever became a lawman.

The more I read about Earp and the whole thing that went down in Tombstone the more I can relate to the Clantons' and "The Cowboys". Yes, they were outlaws, no doubt about it, but what gave Earp the right to infringe on the 2nd Amendment. IMO, not a damn thing. Also, like TK already said, there wasn't much differentiating Earp from the "outlaws" he was policing. When it comes down to it he (Earp) was cut from the same cloth.

That said, here's a quote I love from Wyatt Earp someone shared with me awhile back.

The only reason we know who Wyatt Earp was, is because he had people promoting mostly fictional stories about him. The same can be said about all old west legends! Dime novelist, sympthitic news paper men, etc. Jessy James had the publisher of the major Kansas City news paper as a P.R guy, he was also a Confererate Sympathizer, and member of the Knights of the Golden Circle! Many old west figures, that were more deserving of being remembered, like, Bill Tillman, Chris Madson, Heck Thomas, and Bass Reeves, just to name a few! The shootout at Ingals, Ok, between US Martials, and the Dooland Gang, made the gun fight at the OK Correll, look like childs play! And very few people have even heard of this!

A lot of old western movies have the same premise of "hanging your guns at the door" initiated by the new sheriff/hero/GGWAG.
Nowadays, you could hang you beat up sorry pistol and wait until someone hangs their silver plated and engraved .45 with fancy holster get occupied in dining and do a quick trade.
