In "modern" caliber, the Browning BLR is a fantastic choice.
The Marlin 1895 .45-70 is a classic
The Winchester 88 .308 is an excellent, though somewhat scarce.
Savage 99 .308 is light and handy

Though, not on your radar, Marlin 336 .30-30 or .35Rem will take most every game animal in the US.

Oh an I almost forgot. A little uncomfortable truth for guys that like to read ballistic tables. If you can get that old 170gr flat nose approaching 2300ft sec. at 200 yds it still has more knockdown power than anything .243 and down and less than 100gr. Don't believe me? look it up. Sierra has a wonderful app or tables in the back of their manual This might have something to do with why its still going strong after 124 years and refused to die and every thing its properly pointed at pretty much does.
I looked it up and what the Nosler book says is the 243 Win. 95 gr. approaching 3300 fps has more energy than the .308 dia 170 gr at 2300 fps at all typical hunting ranges. In fact the 243 has double the energy at 500 yds.

Yes and then REALITy dawns on you when you flip back to the Nosler 95gr 243 load page and realize that no powder listed will get that bullet faster than about 2900- 3100 MAX. Welcome to the world of flattened primers and drilling 1/4 pencil holes in game with a varmint round. Been there and done that, but thanks

If your using near max for the 30-30 170 gr comparison you have to use near max for the 243 win. Thats the reality.

reread your statement, I agree and its what I said. Max --about what you can safely get out of both.
I have some ftx bullets loaded faster than that approaching 2400 and Sierra 125s faster than that in the 30. But, again thanks.
We need to quit trashing up the guys thread because your butt-hurt over your little varmint gun. He was asking for recommended lever guns in 30-06, 7mm and 300mag. #movedaphuckon

I have some ftx bullets loaded faster than that approaching 2400 and Speer 130s at close to 2600 in the 30. But, again thanks.

Hey I agree with most everything you said except your ballistics you posted about. Not trashing the OP post on lever gun/caliber. But I did read the OP post not interested in 30-30 and you brought it up twice in one thread with (dont believe me look it up). So I did.

Discussion about bullets and rifles never hurt a thread asking about bullets and rifles. I’m out at the Honobia WMA looking for squirrels this weekend. So far, no luck. I’ve actually never shot a squirrel before so this is definitely a learning process. I’ll produce some meaningful responses to the great input on this thread when I get back.
