I remember seeing Eisenhower in person when he was still POTUS.

I remember a lot of the male high school teachers when I attended HS were WWII and Korea veterans and patriotism to country was taught. Woe be to anyone that questioned the country or flag. And if you didn't conform, discipline was administered. It didn't hurt anyone to respect the flag or country, it was expected.
