Open carry?

I spent a week in a small town in Alaska a few years ago. During that time, I saw only one instance of anyone carrying openly. However, I saw evidence of a few carrying concealed.

I asked the guy carrying openly as to why he did. He said that it was primarily because he lived in the woods and it was not uncommon during certain times of the year to run into bears.

Took a little side trip by boat and then by foot upriver. Our guide carried a 12-Ga pump all the time we were on land.

Point is, there didn't seem to be any big deal about open carry. I guess it's been around for so long, it's sort of like turning right on red.

I have one state representative down here who is against it. We've discussed it before. I guess I'll have to work on it again.

I prefer to express it online and through the local papers. Sometimes, though, Filing Day might be what it takes to get some of their attention. I was very upset that my Representative was able to run unopposed.

I have yet to see one valid argument other than citing the 2nd amendment that could even remotely convince me that OPEN CARRY is a good idea.

Most of us here have firearms backgrounds and understand what a responsibility it is to own and carry them. What about the other 95%? What to do about the guy who has no training and a nice "fashion gun" and a super crappy open top 0 retention holster buying coffee in a 7-11 in a bad part of town with his ipod blaring in his ears? How safe is that guy to be near? He is a walking weapon of opportunity to a BG.

are we going to require any restrictions on size of pistol type of holster continual training etc etc? or just let it go?

I am all for the 2nd amendment and our rights....but when unchecked they lead to infringement on MY right to LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT of happiness I get a tad twitchy....

This. I had to explain the concept of officer discretion and lack of the public's observational skills to someone the other day. While letter-of-the-law illegal, it would be hard to find an LEO that would arrest you for it primarily, and even harder to find a member of the general public that would really notice enough to file a complaint.

It would only take one to make your life very miserable.

I totally agree. I mean, I am *mighty* unhappy when people write books filled with hate and bigotry, so that means those books should be banned! Right?

True. But there's way too many other variables working in your favor in Oklahoma to be worth really losing sleep over.

The implication above is that "Open Carry" takes the place of the current concealed carry law and allows anyone to carry. I will readily confess that I haven't read the proposed "Open Carry" law and have just assumed that it is just an addition to the current concealed carry law.

If that is not the case; if "Open Carry" means that any Tom, Dick and Harry can carry, then I will crawdad on this one. But, I don't think that's the case. I will check into it.

Nope..the proposed law only allows handgun permit holders to open carry by editing the current Self-Defense Act. This isn't a "Constitutional Carry" law like Arizona, or Alaska.

I would rather have the many restrictions on CC lifted than have OC. That being said, I still support OC.
