the reason they do not do a 'lens implant' on everyone instead of lasik, is that the lens implant takes away your eye's natural ability to focus close up. the natural lense whose shape can be changed by your eye muscles, is replaced by a plastic liense that cannot be reshaped, i.e. refocus up close, by your eye's muscles.

these are the same eye muscles that give out around mid age and people loose the ability to see close up.

so lasik is a better choice given the option - you fix the shape of the eye, and you see better at distances and you still have your natural lense to see up close.

lasik has made great strides - but if you search it out deeply, you will find it is not a sure thing. many people have very severe problems - can't see at night, can't go to a movie, have to have multiple pairs of glasses to use throughout the day because the pressures inside the eye causes a diff shape to the eye and this requires diff glasses, severe problems with light, and career ending headaches, problems reading.

make sure you have a good dr. do the research. it is not like buying a pair of shoes.

Yes and no. The main reason cataract surgery isn't done on everyone with refractive complains is that it is an invasive surgery. While refractive surgery is done to the front of the cornea, or at one of the layers of the cornea, cataract surgery is surgery that is actually in the anterior chamber of the eye. You have a much greater chance of complications (although very rare).

Refractive surgery deals with making the image clear on the retina, cataract surgery must be done when the image cannot be clear on the retina because of the cataract. These are two entirely different surgeries for different purposes.

Had mine done in 2004. Best decision ever. I was near sighted and went from 20/-400 to 20/12 which is better the 20/20. I have no issues with dry eyes at all but I am more sensitive to the sun light. I had mine done by Dr Wilson at Clearsight.

I'm taking my kid there in a few days. Tried to get it done earlier but his eyes had not recovered from the contacts.
I was glad they didn't try to rush us in to doing it then.
They seem to know what they are doing and don't try to do it before the eyes are ready, so far I like them.

Had a friend that has to still wear glasses after having it done. She did not know that after surgery. Get a good Dr. for the surgery would be my suggestion.

My wife had it done and it was the best $4K we've ever spent. No problems whatsoever, perfect vision, etc. She went to Clearsight and everyone on the staff was very courteous, professional, and skilled. It was a great experience, and I've never heard anyone say anything bad about the place. Also, my dad got his done there about 12 years ago and is still eagle-eyed. hope that helps!

Money saved on contacts and monthly supplies over the last few years makes the initial cost of the procedure much less painful. Not having to worry about falling asleep with contacts in (even with the breathable ones), cleaning, finding it when it falls out, etc. makes the procedure a must-have!

I recommend their best procedure with the computer-guided laser. DO NOT go for the cheaper procedure if they still offer it. Only issues I had were an itchy eye for a few days, starbursts on all lights for approx 4 months (were kinda nice looking and does go away), and I have some blurriness when trying to read things up close (6-8 inches or less) i.e. when working in tight quarters.

I praise and recommend Lasik every chance I get.

For those with dry eyes in the morning, I recommend Refresh Plus eye drops in the individual vials (very good, portable, and disposable). Sam's Club and Wal-Mart has them.

to shed a little more light on the subject. i did not qualify for lasik. i did not have cataracts but wanted better vision. they did a procedure called 'clear lens ectomny' that replaced my natural lense with a 'corrective lense'. so my vision went to about 20/25 but lost ability to see up close. that is ok because i am middle aged and would of needed bi-focals anyway.

it was the best 6000 i ever spent. would do it again in a minute.
