Time to purchase fresh carry ammo. Have been carrying Fed hydra shok 230 grain +p. My gun likes it...but in the never ending quest for a better mouse trap, is there anything else out there worth looking at? I just read the article in the NRA magazine about the newer federal HST. Academy also has a new sd round from Remington.

Everyone's thoughts?

230gr HST, 230gr Win Ranger SXT, 230gr Speer Gold Dot. Those are the top three and I wouldn't hesitate to carry any of them. No need for +P IMO, now that bullet design is so much better.

For whatever help it may be, I recently picked up a couple of boxes of DRT. It's priced about the same as Speer Gold Dot and shoots great out of my Sig 220; can't think of any reason to think it wouldn't do as well out of a 1911 format pistol.

I saw the article in the NRA mag too. I've shot the original Federal stuff and my pistols like it. The article convinced me enough I bought all new HST ammo. This stuff will be OK as it feeds well and if used for defense will make someone leak.
