My dog is a 15 month old Redbone Coonhound/Lab mix. We have a fairly large backyard with a covered porch. This dog has taken a fondness to digging all along the fence and 4-5 random spots in the yard. We do have occassional gopher activity, but with his incessant digging at the fence line, I'm not buying that he's strictly chasing them. I've tried reprimanding him when I see him doing it to no avail. He has plenty of toys and cool places to lay (it's not even hot outside yet). He is not left in the yard for more than a few hours at a time usually and he gets regular family interaction. His nails are clipped as well.

Has anyone had any success with sprinkling cayenne or black pepper in the areas that a dog is digging to deter them? I'm up for about anything as I'm tired of buying dirt (yes, I know, city boy first world problems) and almost twisting ankles while attempting to mow.

Good luck! I have five dogs that all dig. I've researched the subject, and tried the remedies, and nothing seems to work except for dumping broken chunks of concrete into the holes along the fence line and backfilling behind those. That seems to deter further digging in those spots, but the dogs merely move down the fence line to a new spot. With several hundred feet of fence, it's not very feasible. What you could try is building a sand box, so to speak, where the dogs are allowed to dig, and burying treats like bones in that spot. That MAY get them to dig mostly within the sand box.

Oh geez, that would be a pain. I'd considered burying chicken wire, but with a young daughter, I'd prefer keeping additional sharp items out of the yard. Guess they could both get some use out of the sandbox idea.

I used to hope that they would grow out of digging holes once they were older, but with a 12 year old lab now, I've given up on that way of thinking. He's as good or better now at digging than when he was a pup.
