Or Dune for that matter.

The problem with Battlefield Earth and Dune was the complexity and length of the Novels. At 185K words Dune is a bit lengthy and I don't think it can be done well as a single serving movie. Battlefield Earth at 428K words can't be done as a single serving movie. Way too much detail loss.
The SciFi adaptation of Dune as a mini-series was better. Of course, Dune was too damned long to begin with--there came a point that I just wanted the book to end...

That was the one with William Hurt right? It was OK, that's what it needed was done as a mini series. Maybe Peter Jackson will pick it up, turn it into a trilogy, leave out parts of the story and add characters that didn't exist and make it a mainstream thing.

I don't recall who was in it, just that it was better than the movie.

If Jackson gets it, he'll do that, then turn one of the worm rides into a trilogy of its own.

I'd like to see Stephen King's "IT" made into a movie. I know there was already an attempt at it but that was an abomination not a movie.

I agree with wanting to see a well done movie of the Drizzt Do'Urden/Companions of the Hall books by R.A. Salvatore. Well done is the hard part of making any book into a movie, I think Jackson did an amazing job with the LoTR series so my caveat would have to be any book i list would have to be handled with the same production value. That being said

Most of R.A Salvatores books specifically the Companions of the Hall or Cadderly series
Lots of Clancy books haven't been covered. I loved most of his books but the Bear and the Dragon stands out as a possible good movie.
Terry Brooks Shannara series would could be a good cash cow for a studio if it was handled like the LoTR series. So many books they could make movies for decades...
Weis and Hickman are a great duo as well, so many good series. Specifically I would like to see the Death Gate Cycle and the Dragonlance series would be amazing, i used to get in trouble in the 5th grade for reading "pleasure books" during class.

I could list so many more but those are the ones that would be at the top of my list.

Oh and the Star Wars novels with Thrawn in them would be up at the top of the list too :)
