I got a letter from my insurance saying I'd get a discount if I subscribed to Onstar and let them access the account somehow.

My first thought was that they would use it to track your activities, speed and mileage and it would affect your rates. I still get letters asking my current mileage (which I never respond to).

One of my sons works in the FD and he was telling me that his station responded to a fatality accident and OHP needed his crew to get the "black box" out of the car so that they could download the vehicle activity before the crash.

Through the process of learning to develop apps specifically to collect data, I've learned what massive amounts of data all our systems collect (even without directly asking). It's incredible.

yes. it's amazing the amount of information stored that involved other things than just 'location services' (which doesn't mean your phone doesn't record your location, but what info it shares with the app, IIRC)

i suspect this issue will continue to be a perplexing legal issue since it's not settled regarding what information the .gov can collect from carriers without warrants.

Sadly, if you've purchased a vehicle in the last five years it probably has a black box. Pending the wreck and your involvement tube box can help you or crucify you.

That progressive crap is just that. Plug in the damn thing and even if you don't speed, if you drive too much, stop too fast, go the speed limit or breath, they reduce or eliminate your discount. The only way I got a break is one of my cars is my dog car and it never moved. The other two had stopping too fast even though your just stopping normal at a light.
As far as tracing my movements, they are doing anyway with your phone (like it or not, with or without your permission). Particularly true if you use maps but the same every time you use it.
