^^^ when I lived on clay this is what I learned. A gas auger was hell and essentially useless. A pick was easier.Hire it out.

Rent a skid steer with a front post hole digger. Your issues will go away.
A three point digger is for sandy loam and loose soils. I've built many miles of fence in red clay.
Look and see if the cutting edge is on the bottom side of the bit. It is normally that way so it does not grab in normal soil. On harder holes like clay it is better some times to have the cutting edge ground from the top and at a sharper angle. That way is almost feeds its own cut ( for lack of a better description). If you modify your bit then It can wear out pretty quick so the last one I did I made the cutting tip out of 1/2 bar and welded it on.
