I feel your pain. I was even about to post some snide comment about why this was stumping so many people, but then I remembered how stuff has to be entered in C++, maple ta, wolfram alpha ect ect.

You can follow rules or you can just come up with them and fail at elementary arithmetic.
Parenthesis (brackets) first
Multiplication and division left to right
You can come up with rule that what is "attached" to parenthesis has to be done first - it just doesn't exist.


It's written just fine. It's not a matter of a vote or opinion - just right and wrong.
48/2(9+3)
(9+3)=12
2(12)=24
48/24=2

For it to equal 288 the problem would have to be written like this
(48/2)(9+3)=
(24)(12)=288
