I tried carrying a 6-1/2" 629 for a while around the ranch here. At first I started with an El Paso Saddlery rig with 2" gun belt and holster. It looked cool, but was definitely in the way.

Then I used a Bianchi 5BHL on a regular (sturdy) belt for a while. Was great for walking around and riding the 4-wheeler, but got in the way again when I was using the tractor or Ranger. Then the 629 became an expensive revolver, so I didn't want to trash one carrying it everyday.

I finally settled on an M&P40 in another Bianchi OWB. The 4.25" barrel doesn't get in the way of anything, and it is a relatively cheap pistol. If I were in Alaska, I'd just substitute a G20.

No experience with chest holsters, but they will get in the way if working on stuff. Probably a good idea though if hiking. I have used cross-draw before, definitely a better alternative if seated behind the wheel a lot.
I have no interest in carrying this thing on my belt I can easily see where that would be an issue. I have seen several guys with there pistols on a chest rig under there bino harness and its seems to look pretty comfortable and compact so that what Im planning on trying. Just got to find a holster i like

There is such a thing as a "alaskan holster"

Galco makes them.

Pretty sure there is someone in alaska making them too
Actually!!!!

If I need a chest rig for a big revolver or any pistol I'm going with Diamond D Leather out of Wasilla, AK. Seems to be the standard for carrying serious big heavy guns and they probably have the most experience doing it in the environment you want to use it. I almost got one for my Colt Anaconda but waited too long to order for my trip to Alaska.

Your next purchase should be for quality 44mag ammo through Buffalo Bore. However, the 629 is not capable of shooting their heaviest 44mag +P+ loads. THey do have a lot of other loads you can shoot in it though.

Diamond D are by far the best chest holsters there are.
