My understanding was that it was a ransomware attack on the nationwide Ascension system.
Yep. It was big enough that it made the tech press. As big as they are in Tulsa, I'm surprised that it hasn't made the news here.

Or maybe it did, and I don't watch the news for anything but weather.

I don't understand the amount of success these ransomware attacks achieve. Having worked in cyber security for a large financial institution I can tell you it is astonishingly easy to prevent them from occurring. Most are probably rooted in successful phishing attacks.

From what I know of hospital admins and stories I've heard from folks in healthcare IT, if those hospital admins faced the same consequences as the financial institution execs, it would probably be a lot easier to prevent those attacks from succeeding in healthcare, too.

It's not just healthcare. Any business that has lax safeguards can get hit. This includes vendors with too much access.

Indeed, we had a ransomware hit very early on in the lifespan of these new attacks. It had only a minor impact on a single shared folder, and we recovered from backup very quickly, We learned from the experience and never had another event like it. Ever. To this day.

Agreed - good doctor. He was my primary care until I chose Blue Cross Medicare & Ascension only allowed their in-house insurance to be accepted. So I went to the Hillcrest system which suffered through their own hack attack a few months ago.
