Where is the line between drone & hobby plane?

Some of the pre-drone hobby plane were pretty exotic.

If it's a private owner is it a hobby plane or a drone?

Can a police department have a hobby plane or are they always drones?

When I was about 12 I had a P40 that would drop aplastic bomb. Was that a hobby plane or a potentially armed drone? It wasn't radio controlled, so I'm guessing hobby plane.

Just curious as to ya'lls thoughts.

When I was into flying R/C heli's and planes, the distinction was that whether or not you were flying it by direct sight (standing on ground) vs something like a video feed a la first person flying or autonomous system.

By definition, any craft that is piloted remotely is considered a UAV. the term "drone" is a slang term. The military, FAA, etc do not refer to their UAV's as "drones" that are "Unmanned Aerial Vehicles" or RPA's - Remotely Piloted Aircraft.

ICAO definition (which is the legal definition) of a UAV is "aircraft systems without a flight crew on board"

That covers both hobby and commerical/military applications.
