Land is free and plentiful, the weather is good and there would be little chance of confrontation with the neighbours.

Yet almost nobody wants to wants to move to Pitcairn, the tiny Pacific island that was settled by mutineers from HMS Bounty.

The population on Britain’s smallest colony has been dwindling for years, and there are now fewer than 50 islanders left. But locals are struggling to find new settlers to follow in the footsteps of Fletcher Christian, who led the mutiny.

Only one application has been received to move to the island, even though the government provides all immigrants with a plot to build their own house and temperatures stay above 62F (17C) all year round.

The island, one of 14 remaining British overseas territories, was tarnished by a child abuse scandal in 2004, when six men were imprisoned for sexual offences, including Steve Christian, the mayor and a descendant of Fletcher.
Since then, the Pitkerners have been sustained by government aid as their population has shrunk. At its height, just before the Second World War, 200 residents lived on the sub-tropical island, which measures two square miles.
“We’ve been appealing for more people to boost the population,” said Jacqui Christian, 44, who represents the island in Europe. “We’ve had many enquiries but only one person has applied to move to Pitcairn.

“The reality is that we don’t really have any jobs to offer. Islanders used to sell stamps to raise funds but, of course, stamp collecting is not as popular as it once was.”
She added that there are now fewer ships running between Pitcairn and New Zealand, more than 3,000 miles away.
There is only one general store on the island, which opens three times a week. Orders for food from New Zealand must be placed every three months.

Most of the island’s population is descended from the eight mutineers who settled on the island in 1789 after Christian mutinied against William Bligh, the Bounty’s captain. They brought six Polynesian men and twelve women from Tahiti with them.

Ms Christian admitted that the island’s location seemed like “the middle of nowhere”.
“But once you are there, you are as connected as anywhere else,” she said. “The island has electricity and the internet now.

“It is a special place and it is beautiful seeing the stars without light pollution. There are the bluest waters you have ever seen.”

Ever since I read the Bounty trilogy as a teenager I have had a fascination with the south Pacific and Pitcairn's island. I would have jumped at the opportunity twenty years ago.

It would be cool for awhile, but beautiful sky's and amazing sunsets only lasts for awhile.

No mention of shooting ranges, or places to blow off tannerite. It would get real boring after awhile.

I have an idea. If a couple of us settle it, declare war on the US, and then surrender, think they would offer war reparations so a casino could be built? Build it and they will come?

Let's weigh the pros and con's...

Pros:

Very few people.
A great deal of independence and opportunity to make your own future.
No left lane campers, or traffic for that matter.
No rude Walmart shoppers that don't return their shopping baskets.
Lots of the hard work that makes a man a better man.

Con's:

Very few people.
No hospitals or dentists (this is more important as you pass 50)
No fast food.
Diesel generators only run from 8am - 1pm and 5pm - 9pm.

Looks like a great opportunity to secede from Great Brittian and establish our own nirvana...
What did I leave out?
