Friend of mine likes planting stuff you can eat around his house and did these onions.
He wrapped a ball of mud around the onion bulb, then stuck the mud ball to the surface of the garden. As the onion grows it pushes off the dirt around it, leaving to bulb exposed.
The bricks hold moisture and heat.
He put onions in the back yard and not doing as good but no bricks/holes just in a regular garden.
