what a time to be a shooter! when i got into it, which was right after i graduated highschool, 1,000 was about $250 depending on steel vs brass. so im probably one of the more younger shooters on OSA
Yeah the “back in my day” comments are more painful the older you get :)

Thanks for your replies Gentlemen.

It seems that the rifles have increased in value more than I expected,,,
That $400 to $700 price range seems pretty much the norm.

The SKS is the only semi-auto milsurp that ever attracted my eye,,,
For me it would be just a range toy so I don't mind 10-round capacity.

To tell the truth I never liked the aesthetics of rifles with big banana mags,,,
The 10-round SKS just had a sleekness to it that was eye-pleasing,,,
Sorta reminiscent of the British 303 mags.

After I had the idea that I might treat myself with a new rifle,,,
I also went to a few on-line ammo dealers,,,
Ammo has gone way up as well.

Perhaps I should just be content,,,
Shooting my fine bevy of .22 rifles/pistols.

Anyways, thanks for the info you have provided.

I was going to mention you will need to find some ammo for it but you researched that.

I had an SKS given to me after all my guns were stolen years ago for a present from my girlfriend and I gifted it to my fishing buddy many years later.
Was accurate enough for deer killing at 75 yards but each step you took backwards after that the bullet would hit the paper in another spot.
Keep taking that big step backwards and shooting at paper and I ended up with a spiral pattern on paper.
110 gr. hollow points.

I like my bolt guns in centerfire the most.
Savage Axis bolt action gets it done in .223.

I have absolutely no need for an SKS,,,
But for some reason I've decided that I want one to play with.

Way back in the mid 90's I went to a gun show in California,,,
They had Chinese 10 shot SKS's for $99.00 each,,,
I bought one and 100 rounds of ammo.

I shot all the ammo the first )and only) range trip,,,
A few months later I was in a desperate bind,,,
And sold it for what I paid for it.

Now in my old age I shoot my many .22 rifles/handguns for recreation,,,
But for some reason I have this urge to fire something centerfire.

So when I am up and about again,,,
I'm going to hit a few gun shows and try to find one.

I know that $99.00 price will not be found,,,
So I'm asking advice on what I should expect to pay for one.

Any advice from you good people?

From my research alot depends on what type SKS you are looking for. There are 2 types from what I understand. Those that were built for the military and those built to be sold to the public. We got both here in the US. One thing to know is that being made in Communist countries, they are made on the same machines and with the same skematacs as the ones built for the military, as the party controls it all. So they are all built exactly the same. With possibly a few extras on the civilian guns.
Prices I found were $350 to $800. I would think $500 for a civilian Chinese model would be a fair price in today's market.

Well, I solved my dilemma,,,
Instead of me going ahead and buying one,,,
I just purchased a 240 round pack of ammo for the SKS.

Turns out my buddy has a very nice Yugo SKS,,,
He said I can shoot it as much as I want,,,
As long as I buy my own ammo.

Almost as good as owning it myself.

We took it out last Sunday and put 20 rounds through it,,,
We each shot 10 rounds and had some fun,,,
My shoulder isn't bruised at all,,,
But it's still a bit sore.

No matter,,,
We both had fun.

I have a very nice Yugoslavian SKS with bayonet but I never shoot it anymore. I prefer shooting the 16" barrel lightweight Magpul furniture 7.62x39 AR upper I built with a 1-4 Tacticon LPVO & mount.
I have shot the SKS out to 500yds with passable accuracy. Stock doesnt fit me good and hard to get a good sight picture. Great hip shooting junk pile blaster though. I thought about doing an AK mag setup for it but the AR truck gun is lighter and shorter for my needs and the SKS sits in the safe
