According to <a href="http://d279m997dpfwgl.cloudfront.net/wp/2016/08/MacDormanM.USMatMort.OBGYN_.2016.online.pdf" target="_blank">a new study</a>, published in the September issue of <em>Obstetrics and Gynecology</em>, the spike in the mortality rate is difficult to explain “in the absence of war, natural disaster, or severe economic upheaval.”</p><p></p><p>This alarming development coincided with the state’s decision to slash its family planning budget by two-thirds in 2011—an attempt to shut down abortion providers that ultimately forced <a href="http://www.npr.org/2016/01/28/464728393/texas-tries-to-repair-damage-wrought-upon-family-planning-clinics" target="_blank">82 clinics</a>, many of which never performed the controversial procedure, to close. The study’s authors do not posit a correlation between this draconian policy change and the shocking increase in pregnancy-related deaths, but women’s health professionals have.
