That's dedication to duty right there.

A veteran Detroit paramedic is being hailed a hero after he saved the life of a man having a heart attack while he was having one himself.

Joseph Hardman was giving CPR to a patient, who hasn't been named, last Friday morning when, on the way to the hospital, he began having severe chest pains.

His partner drove them both to the Detroit Medical Center's 24/7 Cardiac Care unit and the paramedics dropped off the patient before Hardman himself went to the ER.

Video in the story.

Not to make light of the paramedic's situation, but do you think he thought maybe he had just pulled a muscle? I know my brother got hurt several times on calls and sometimes he didn't even realize it until they were all done and someone said "Hey dude ... Did you know you are bleeding?"

BB, As a person who has 5 stents, I can say when you are having a heart attack you really know it. It is more a silent killer in women because doctors pass it of as heartburn.

So, with guys you KNOW you are having a heart attack??

I worked with a guy who went to have a physical and didn't come back to work that day. Doctor walked him across the street to the hospital and admitted him right then. He had bypass surgery that night but he said he never felt better in his life. He had no clue. Doc said he was " " this close to keeling over dead. Had a quadruple bypass, IIRC ...

I have heard it said that a lot of women have no idea because they don't have chest pain. It's pain in their arms, or like you said, heartburn, or even sometimes a really bad headache ... :lookaroun How in the heck am I gonna know?? LOL

My father died of a heart attack and never was in much pain, he just had problems breathing. His was so bad that his doctor told us that if he had been in ICU he probably would have had only a 25% chance. This has been a few years ago and they have improved treatment since then. There is such a thing as a silent heart attack, even in men.

On my very first stent I thought I had acid reflux. I take medicine for that and I was out. The pharmacy said I haqd to have a doc's script and my doc was out of town. I parked away from emergency so as not to take a place for someone who needed a closer place. I walked in and told them I had heartburn and needed to see the doc to refill my script. I sat and waited 25 min. until I was called back. I knew the doc and as I went in I saw him and told him my doc was out of town. He call me to the desk and wrote the script. As I got ready to go one of the nurses suggested they take a BP and check me with a heart monitor. I sat down in the chair and woke up the next day with a stent. generally the worst heartburn you have ever had is a heart attack I've been told. Sure worked for me. Now I know how they feel. I've had plenty of experience.

I had a case of heartburn, I didn't think a lot about it but it was odd as I do not get heartburn.
A month later I had a heart scan at St. Anthony's Hospital because it was on my list to do some day along with getting a colonoscopy as I was approaching the age when it's a good idea.

A pretty young lady sat down beside me and put her hand on my knee and said if your score is over 400 you need to see a cardiologist and your score is 1386.
She told me she lost her father at about my age and that I should not put this off and I did.

The cardiologist took me in for surgery and determined that I was too far gone for stents, I then talked to a heart lung specialist who said I might live for years but there was a reasonable chance I would drop dead walking to the parking lot.
The next day I had triple bypass surgery and it would have been quadruple but that 4th artery had long ago sealed up 100% stopped feeding that section of my heart, I should have died years ago but 3 little arteries grew in my heart and bypassed that major artery without anyone knowing about it.

Just because you are a man and you have no symptoms doesn't mean you don't have a problem.
I drove a truck, unloaded trailers and manhandled heavy equipment and my only symptom looking back was that I would occasionally get tired after heavy exertion, I just assumed it was me getting old.

The heart scans are $50 bucks or less. What is your life worth to you and your family?
