The good folks of Utah are predicted to join the 21st century in another 200 years or so. Much of Europe went through the Renaissance hundreds of years ago, while imbeciles in the backwaters of America continue to wonder what caliban is stirring the heavens this week.

Actually MightyMouse we are reverting to being like the decadent pagans of the late Roman Empire. Wealth has made us soft, a small percentage of the country carries almost the entire weight of defending it, while an increasingly large percentage of the adult population spends more and more of their time simply looking for more ways to be idle or inebriated/stoned. Children are increasingly seen as an unnecessary burden (or even a carbon footprint enlarging evil) - especially among those most able to "afford" children - because they impinge upon their ability to indulge their unbridled appetites.

Gibbon devoted a chapter or two in his famous work to discussing the reasons for the fall of the empire, but little of what he discussed then seems to be happening now, or maybe my Gibbon is a bit rusty....
