is this ammo any good in a 5.56x45 round? I found what seems to be a good price online for some AP stuff and was wondering if the quality was alright. Never shot it before, so was hoping someone on here could give me their thoughts on it.

Prvi does not make an "AP" 5.56mm round. They do make an M855 equivalent round that has a steel penetrator in the tip, but it is far from Armor Piercing. If some website is advertsing it as true AP they are not being truthful.

OK, and not trying to split hairs here, but if they make a round equivalent to the M855 then what is it that keeps it from being a true AP round? I'm new to the whole AP business, but I guess I thought that a steel core was basically an AP round.

M855 is not a true AP round. M855 has a steel tip (as shown below), but it is not hardened steel and the majority of the projectile is still lead.

M995 is a true AP round as it has a hardened tungsten-carbide penetrator (you can see the tungsten core in the cutaway round below on the left). It is not available for sale to civilians anywhere that I am aware of.

You can read all about 5.56mm ammo at: http://www.razoreye.net/mirror/ammo-oracle/AR15_com_Ammo_Oracle_Mirror.htm

I have shot about 3800 rounds of the PPU M-193 through two of my carbines at classes and miscellaneous shooting. I have never had a reliability issue and the ammunition in question was certainly 'minute of *******'.

I have no direct experience with PPU's M855 equivalent.
