I listened to a podcast about him a few years ago. He got started in the comics game because he couldn't find anything else. He essentially stumbled into that line of work through a cousin, or some such.
No experience, no reason to do it, except it offered a paycheck.

I don't doubt that a bit.

But ya gotta realize, he didn't have all the sci-fi/fantasy stuff that's available today to fuel his imagination and give him ideas.

The man was an innovator.
