I have a Remington express pump 870 and it doesn't say anything about steel shot compatible.
I don't know if they even did anything different on newer shotguns designed for steel shot.
Are these shotguns considered safe with steel shot?

Seems Remington changed the year to after 1963 up to #2 shot . If using a full choke tube it must say for steel or lead on it.

Barrels will usually develop a ring{bulge. After a few hundred steel shot shells. Hence the reason screw in chokes were developed. Choke tube gets a ring. unscrew it, toss in trash and screw in new one.

I’m sure that would be fine. Even Browning which seems to be one of the manufacturers who were late to the “steel shot” party had things straightened out by then.

All rem choke barrels are steel shot safe. Steel in a mod choke patterns like a full. Tighter than modified choke must be labeled steel safe, Carlsons and Trulock sell chokes that would work. Rem arms can barely get a gun out the door.
I would consider Remington fixed choke barrels not compatible with steel. However they can be used with no toxic shot like Boss shells (copper coated bismuth) which perform more comparable to lead in pellet energy and pattern.
