Way back in 1973 I was stationed at Lowry AFB,,,
For an 11 month training class.

I rented a mobile out in Aurora,,,
So I could live with my wife and child.

There was a public range just about a mile form me,,,
So I got into my Mom's attic,,,
And got out my .22 rifle.

I was quite surprised when my wife (thankfully my ex-wife),,,
Discovered she liked shooting .22 rifles,,,
She was quite good at it.

I got a nice IRS return that year so I bought her a Marlin Model 75,,,
I got it at K-Mart and paid a whopping $65 for it,,,
It came with an el-cheapo 2X scope.

I liked the Model 60 they also had better than the model 75,,,
But it was almost $20 more so I cheaped out.

Anyways, my ex took to shooting like a duck to water,,,
I could line ten 12 gauge shells on the rail,,,
At 50 yards she would clear them,,,
In ten shots from a bench.

Anyways I carved her initial "G" on the forend of the stock,,,
Using a Dremel tool just in front of the sling stud.

We divorced in 1975 and she naturally took her rifle,,,
I never saw either of them again,,,
Until yesterday.

Anyways, I was out and about,,,
And decided to hit the pawn shops in my area,,,
At the second shop I saw a beat up scoped Marlin Model 75.

I really didn't pay any attention to it,,,
Until I noticed someone had ground a Schnabel forend on it,,,
They had removed the wood on the forend just in front of the sling swivel.

There's no way of actually knowing if that was her rifle or not,,,
But the wood that was removed was exactly where I had carved that "G",,,
And they removed exactly the amount that would have been required to erase it.

The pawn shop owner wouldn't tell me who had sold the rifle to him,,,
I seriously doubt it would have been her as last I knew,,,
She moved to Missouri right after the divorce.

For about 1/10th of a second I thought about buying it,,,
But I really have no use for it so I passed,,,
Besides, he wanted $150 for it.

That was 2.3 times what I originally paid,,,
And it was pretty well beat up by now.

Anyhoo,,,
It brought back memories of her,,,
And that itself was enough for me to pass on the rifle.

Like the "Telephone Operator" said,,,
What a ko-inky-dinky.

Only people who remember "Laugh In" will get the reference.

I've been hoping for over 40 years to get back the pistol my ex- took when we divorced. It was an Iver Johnson break-top in .38 S&W, which I bought by mistake thinking it was .38 Special. Can't remember if it was a 4" barrel or longer, but both of us loved that pistol. She left it in an unlocked car in Las Vegas. I expect it wound up at a pawn shop or used in a crime, or both. I've not ever found one like it for sale, either. :crying:

Should you run across a pre-safety Marlin 336 in 35 Rem, it's really mine.

The former Mrs Dumpstick took it with her, even though as a felon she couldn't posses.

So, check your safes everyone. If you have one, please return it to me. It's probably my rifle, stolen decades ago.

Thanks.

The one I had access to once upon a time belonged to my 3rd & final stepfather. He'd promised to take my brother and I out to shoot it, but never did. Didn’t keep his promises to my mom, either.

I loaned my buddy a 22 mag High Standard pistol cause his wife claimed there was someone stalking her back in the early 80's. Not long after they got divorced and she wouldn't give him back my gun. I wondered if she had a lover hanging around or something. Anyway - I still have the 22 lr cylinder you could trade out and a box of 22 mag ammo in my odd and end box.
Dad always said, quit looking up that horses A to see what killed it. Hard deal to do.
