I'll be traveling to California and I've looked a little bit online to get an idea of how to travel with a handgun, from what I've gathered before entering CA the handgun has to be in a locked box with the mag out and of course nothing bigger than a 10rd mag. Does that sound about right? also, is there any restrictions on ammo?

anything that ya'll feel will help I would much appreciate

also im looking for a 10rd mag

You can take larger mags if I remember right, just break them down to a "kit" form. Remove the floorplate, spring, and follower and put them in a bag. If you are traveling in a car in the trunk is best if it's a pickup a locked case. Transporting from a vehicle also requires a locked case one that is approved by the TSA should be good though. The ammo also is supposed to be in another locked case if I remember right. . . wouldn't want you to throw a bullet at an innocent bystander or be able to get to it in enough time to have it actually do some good.

San Fransisco does have bans on specific ammunition as well. Some of the best info you can find is here http://www.handgunlaw.us/ they have some travel info as well as. Some other info here http://www.opencarry.org/

There is no reason to take mags larger than 10 rounds to CA as assembling them there is illegal(unless you "permanently" block them to 10 rounds). As far as carry goes, CA does NOT recognize any out of state licenses, so your firearm must be in a locked container(hard or soft is fine). The magazines CAN be loaded, and they CAN be in the locked container with your firearm as long as they are not inserted into the firearm(they do not have to be stored separately). Unloaded open carry was a legal loophole that I believe has been made illegal, so the above carry(locked container) is your only method as an out of state resident. Even long guns must be in locked containers now; it used to not be this way, but I believe they just banned that as well(open carry of long guns). calguns.net is a great resource, but there are members here(like myself) who are previous residents of the state as well as members of calguns. Fell free to ask your questions here(go to calguns and ask on the forums and you will most likely get referred to their wiki and also receive some guff for not using the search feature....lol).

FYI - I lived in CA for 12 years, and have only been back in OK since Feb of this year.

Don't bother carrying a gun. If you get attacked, just throw a pine cone and hope the tree huggers don't file a restraining order.

I know CA doesnt recognize my CCW I just want to be more clear on how to transport in my vehicle legally. I'll be traveling through a few states with the fam and I just want a little extra insurace. just in case. Funny thing is out of all the states we're going through CA is the only one i will have to jump through hoops for.

Any chance you could change your mind about going to Kali? The reason I ask is that every dollar you spend there will be used to support their socialist agenda. I understand if you have family there, but otherwise I see no reason to go.

I bought one of these: A Rifkin Pistol Bag when I lived there, but it may be a tad expensive for a one time visit. I also know others who have used netbook/tablet cases....although you must be certain that the firearm cannot be easily retrieved(i.e. merely locking two zippers together). Here is an example that would work and is used by some calgunners(bought at target):

You can probably find something similar at wal-mart, as well as a tackle box or some other hard case that can also be easily locked, but not easily opened without unlocking the lock.

Also, if by freak chance you have to deal with police and end up in a worst case scenario, the Calguns Foundation(a separate entity from the calguns.net forums) has a number to call in case you need an attorney: (800) 556 2109.

State that you DO NOT wish to answer questions, then remain silent.
DO NOT CONSENT to a Search(especially to your locked possessions).
Demand an Attorney and call the # above.

Just to reiterate: Loaded mags are fine(even in the same container as the firearm), as long as both are locked, and the locked container can be in the cab of the car(does not have to be in truck).....
