Just curious. I fly 2-3 weeks a month. Always fly with a pistol, never had any issue. Went last week to check in, asked for a firearm declaration tag. The agent all of a sudden got flustered, looked around, couldn't find the form, finally found it and handed it to me. I signed it, put it in my luggage next to my case. She said is it in a hard case? I said yes, and since my suitcase was still opened, let her see the case. She said I need to see that it is not loaded. I told I her I would be glad to show a TSA officer, but I was not opening my case without an officer present. She asked about the ammo, told her it was in the case. She asked if it was in a hard case or the original package, I told her it was in the magazines, outside of the gun, locked in the case with the gun. Several other questions, hemmed and hawed around, and finally told me I need a TSA lock on it. I explained that you cannot have a TSA lock on it, it needs to be locked by me, and I need to retain the key. I told her I would wait to see if they needed additional screening. Figured she just had not dealt with it very much, no big deal.

On my return trip, I ran into the same kind of reaction and questions. I was flying out of Omaha, which is always a little tighter due to USSSTRATCOM based there, but they had extra officers on hand, and several posted at the ticket counters as well. In both screening areas, the scanners were questioning most of every bad that came through, and I was patted down in both places. Of course when I got to the hotel and home, I had a tag in my bag saying it had been searched by the TSA, which is not uncommon at all when I am traveling with a handgun. Maybe it was just me this week, but I had more explaining, and weird acting TSA people this week than I have had in a long time. I know we have some TSA people here, just wondering if there was a reason for it?

Never had an issue in OKC. When I flew back from Indianapolis in November I had all kinds of issues. While at a Special Olympics conference I received a bowling pin (had the conference logo on it). TSA "officer", you can't bring that club on the plane, you have to check it. Me, it's not a club, it's a bowling pin. Well she won, I had to run all the way back and beg the lady to call my bag back. While there TSA calls me over the PA to contact them again. They wanted to check my locked gun case. They wouldn't let me go down with them, so I was able to view the camera footage of it after explaining my wife's Christmas present and my duty weapon were in the case. Took forever. So finally clear the check and when I wait to board the plane I see one of the people I'm flying with carrying her bowling ball. Guess its not a cannon ball to TSA.

I always put a nice big pickle in a baggie in one of my front pockets of my pants. When the agent looks up during the pat down with that confused look I give them a quick wink. For some reason I have no other issues.......plus a decent snack while on the flight!
