How do you feel about the idea of a Gun Offender list? Similar to the Sex Offender Registry but for people who commit crimes with a firearm?

I was reading this article and that was mentioned. I realized I had not thought of that. I'll have to think about it for a little while before I can make up my own mind how I feel. I know that I'm all for the Sex Offender Registry (it isn't perfect, though). My sister and her husband are not welcome in my home because of her husband's status and a couple other factors. I think, if I could find out that someone had committed a crime with a gun, I may feel the same way about having them near me and my firearm(s).

All that said, there are a number of things I didn't like in that article. The thing that pissed me off the most is this statement - “My fear is that it’s already slowing ... and nothing is going to come of it, just like nothing came of Columbine or Virginia Tech.” - which proves they don't care about to kiddos and that they're just using these tragedies to further political agendas. This is infuriating to me.

Why are gun offenders worthy of special attention? Why not just an offender list?

We have to get out of the box the anti-gunners have created.

Gun crime is crime. Gun violence is violence. Criminals are criminals regardless of what tool they used in the course of their crime.

I understand what you mean and you're right, we should target violence in general. I was just thinking of a list of people there so that you could check someone before you allow them around your guns so they don't come up missing. But, like I said, I need to think about it. Just in the few minutes since I posted that, I remembered that there is a way to check and see if someone is a felon, if only in this state. I would really hate to end up on the wrong wide of the law in that regard. Just gauging opinion.

Good question and I get the intent...but if one is genuinely concerned about not selling to a felon then you already have the option of transferring through a dealer. We don't need to be creating more government lists and registries just because the anti's have their panties in a wad.

Yea, and I'm kinda leaning that way. Felons are already documented as felons and I think that would probably be enough. My inquiry really didn't have anything to do with urgency or someone being bent out of shape. I was just kinda wondering. Wasn't really time sensitive. I really do appreciate the input. Thanks.

Much like with a sex offender registry, there are crimes that are classified as "Sex crimes" that bear little to no resemblance to the true menaces of society.

Maybe it's urban legend, feel free to correct me, but urinating in public can often be classified as a sex offense. Not that we should encourage urination in public, but depending on the situation, it's hardly as heinous as child pornography or molestation.
