Hey guys,

I was sitting here at my work computer, being weird, when all of a sudden my spidey-sense started to go off. I started checking different ammo websites and search engines, and found that 7.62x39mm was sold out at several different retailers. Now my spidey-sense was really tingling now, and after looking around, I decided I need to move. I found the two calibers that I was looking for on one website, and decided to punch it. A few seconds later, 1,500 rounds of 9mm and 1,000 7.62x39mm rounds were inbound, but my wallet had taken a serious hit to the tune of $570.

And this got me thinking....I could have bought a gun for that much money. Now, in all honestly, I've got four (4) 9mm handguns with no ammunition, so the need was definitely there, but still, I've could have bought me a gun for what I paid for the ammo.

Still, what good is a gun without bullets, am I right?

Just another day in Jonny Sam's world.

I had this same dilemma about 2 years ago. I always stocked up on pistols, shotguns, etc. But only had at most 200 rounds for each. Then it got me when over one summer (in a school teacher in Moore so summers off) my wife was recovering from a surgery and couldn't get out much all summer. Didn't have much ammo to shoot, so I stated working on correcting that. I now have 20 + pistols, 3/4 of them are 9mm. Shotguns, rifles and now have 4,500 rounds of 9mm ammo to go with it plus 2,000 or more 40 S&W rounds. It's all about preparation because now I can go shoot anytime I want, that summer sucked from boredom but taught me a lesson.

Stock up on ammo for guns you already have. I'm trying to hold off on another gun purchase until i get back to 1000 rounds of 9mm and at least 250 of each 357 magnum and 38 special

Two things come to mind when thinking this over...

2) You can't shoot a gun without ammo.

Having been thru at least two previous ammo shortages, I have vowed over time to NEVER be caught short in that department again.

The old phrase "buy it cheap and stack it deep" holds.
Even though cheap by today's standards may not be cheap by yesterday's standards, ammo don't go bad.

Right there with ya. I keep no less than 5000 rounds of every caliber I own. I, like you and others, had a reality check a few years ago. That won't happen again.

Who would have thought 2 years ago that you still couldn't walk into any Walmart and find simple 22LR ammo stocked at all times. I can remember buying a Federal Bulk pack almost every time I went to Walmart and never seen it OOS.

Curious for you guys keeping thousands of rounds per caliber, did you ever feel like consolidating calibers? I've dropped my setup to only 12ga, 22lr, 9mm, 45, 7.62, and 5.56 but have been thinking of adding a 17hmr. Everytime I get ready to pull the trigger on a new caliber, I always find myself figuring out away to build/buy around the calibers I already have. Just curious if I'm the only one.

Yes I only have 9mm/40 S&W as stated and only 1 .380 acp (because I like LCP for summer, so just a few boxes for it) and 12 gauge. I don't ever really worry too much about that one, never seem much of a run on it. But I need to start stocking up on it too.
