What of tribes in South America and Malaysia (they still exist) that have never been contacted by modern humans. The adults never had a chance to know about Christianity. Are they damned?

No. Depending on how they lived their life regarding right and wrong in the heart, Purgatory might be their destination.

To me, this thread isn't at all about concern for "doomed" children, but is really just a vehicle for people who think they are superior to people who are different or have different beliefs than themselves to have a mutual admiration society.

SO you think people think they are superior to others?
Maybe you can spend a little more time thinking about what people say or write rather than thinking about what you think people think.

1. Are godless kids doomed? There's a substantial amount of good research on the topic, but this sociologist is making headlines: http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0115-zuckerman-secular-parenting-20150115-story.html.

2. Also, the negative correlation between atheism and violent crime has been replicated all over the world (i.e., as the prevalence of atheism increases, the prevalence of violent crime decreases); so I'm curious if this may be a missing link in the debates regarding the relationship between prevalence of guns and prevalence of violent crime.

In response to #1, I have to ask how many of these "doomed" kids are being raised with Christian values that may not be labeled as such. Whatever works - works. Does it really matter where you learn it?

For #2, I would posit that Islam as a religion fosters more violence that any other religion; in fact I'd say it fosters most of the violence in the world these days. As for my belief, I believe Islam is not truly a religion in any godly fashion since it enslaves half its population(women) and murders anyone else who will not submit. I would put Islam - which is its sharia law more than anything else - is atheistic, ungodly, cultish - probably more akin to a violent gang.

Therefore, taking Islam out of the "religion" category and placing it under atheism, the opposite is true regarding a correlation between religion and violence.

It all boils down to opinion; what a person chooses to believe. In other words, your mileage may vary.

Respectfully,

Woody

If it were the case that atheists were raised with christian values, then values would be a constant...meaning there wouldn't be any difference between the groups if this were the causal mechanism. There is a difference between the groups, so if everyone is raised and "values" essentially the same things, we wouldn't see this particular pattern in the data. Therefore, it isn't christian values *in atheists* behind these results.

The correlations hold up regardless of religious ideology, so it isn't muslims confounding the results. I don't follow your point about placing islam in an atheistic category, but in any case, the same correlational patterns emerge for all religions, with one exception--buddhism. As the prevalence of buddhism increases, the prevalence of violence decreases.
